When Jason arrived at First Place, he had lost everything, including stable employment. This single father of two children had a need and a plan in mind. He was homeless and discouraged, but knew he needed to find a clean, safe home for himself and his two teen children.
After moving in, Jason was willing to do anything to earn an income. He was able to get a part-time job working at a dog grooming business. He supplemented that income by walking dogs and offered his services to clean, removing dog feces from the yards of homeowners. A job many would shy away from, but not Jason.
First Place was able to stabilize Jason with a transitional housing unit, which got him over his first hurdle. He then settled his kids into a great routine and after-school activities. Now it was time to help him find more reliable employment. Working closely with Brenda; a skilled and compassionate First Place Case Manager, she was able to find opportunities that closely aligned with Jason’s interests, skills, and experience.
One of the jobs openings that surfaced was for the City of Seattle and turned out to be an ideal fit. After helping him complete the application process, Brenda gave him follow-up and interviewing advice, provided encouragement, and with persistence, he landed the job.
Soon after getting his foot in the door with the City of Seattle, Jason exhibited strong commitment by willingly putting in extra hours during critical times. Meanwhile, he continued to work for the dog grooming company, taking on the responsibility of working with the agency’s more difficult-to-manage dogs. Which at times, put him in harm's way resulting in bodily injury.
Fast forward…..
After a year of demonstrating strong work ethics and love for the animals, he received a managerial promotion resulting in higher pay, which gave him the ability to afford and locate permanent housing. Finding a suitable place proved to be frustrating but First Place worked closely with him in his search and was able to help him find a very nice large apartment near his job. Jason has moved far beyond the sadness that enveloped his life, and that past is in the rearview mirror. He is now thriving in unimaginable ways.
